バーニー・サンダース氏の英語を聞いてみよう

現在、アメリカ合衆国の大統領選挙で民主党のバーニー・サンダース/Bernie Sanders 氏が、ヒラリー・クリントン/Hilary Clinton 氏と民主党指名候補の座を争っていますが、彼が演説している内容がとても素晴らしいのです。

サンダース/Sanders 氏は自称、民主社会主義者/democratic socialist で、福祉や教育について貧しい人々の側に立ち、貧富の差を無くすことを主張しています。

ヒラリー・クリントン/Hilary Clinton 氏との競争では支持者の数で差を付けられていますが、ヒラリーの支持基盤は従来の既得権層が中心であるのに対し、バーニー・サンダース/Bernie Sanders 氏の支持基盤は以前まであまり大統領選挙に関心が無かった若者たちです。

サンダース氏の主張でもっとも若者に訴えている政策のひとつは、大学教育の無償化だと思います。

今日はサンダース陣営が作成したビデオをご紹介します。 和訳は字幕で表示されますので、ここには英語のスクリプトを、注意すべき語句の解説と併せて掲載します。とてもゆっくり話されているので、最初は字幕を見ながら英文を聞き取ってみましょう。

What does it mean to live a moral life?  When we talk about morality, and when we talk about justice, we have to understand that there is no justice when so few have so much and so many have so little.  

morality: 道徳、倫理  下線部： 主語は人々なので可算名詞のため、few many が使われ、補語は富とかお金を表す不可算名詞なので、little much が使われている、短いけど意味の深い言い回し。

There is no justice when the top one-tenth of one percent owns almost as much wealth as the bottom ninety percent.

There is no justice: 字幕では「不正義」を主語にした文だが、言い換えるなら「（...のようなときには）正義は無い」ということ。 one-tenth: 十分の一

Millions of people are working long hours for abysmally low wages, working hard, but unable to bring in enough money to adequately feed their kids.
abysmally: 底知れず、とてつもなく　adequately: 十分に、適切に

There is no justice when the United States of America has the highest rate of childhood poverty of any major country on earth.

poverty: 貧困

How can we talk about morality, of our justice, when we turn our backs on the children of our country? 

We have, in this country, sufficient amount of money to put more people in jail than any other country on earth.  But apparently we do not have enough money to provide jobs and education to our young people.  We are the only major country on earth that does not guarantee healthcare to all people as a right.

sufficient: 十分な 　　apparently: 一見してみると 　　healthcare: 医療

All are god's children—the poor, the wretched—they have a right to go to a doctor when they are sick.

the wretched: 不幸な境遇にいる人々

I want you to think of what this great country can be.  

We can be a nation which joins other nations around the world in guaranteeing healthcare to all people as a right.  

We can be a nation in which working parents can get quality of affordable child care. 

We can be a nation in which every American, regardless of his or her income, can get a college education.

We can be a nation in which every senior lives out their lives in dignity and security.

We can be a nation, in where everyone, no matter their race, their religion, their disability or their sexual orientation realizes the full promise of equality that is our birthright as Americans.

We can be a nation: 私たちは...する国になれる　in which: 関係代名詞の前に前置詞が来る形。ここでは in the nation （その国で）を意味する。 lives: 二つが近くに並んでるが、先のは動詞 live の三人称単数現在、後は名詞 life の複数形。それぞれ発音が違うので注意。　dignity: 尊厳   in where: 文法的なミス。in which か、where だけのどちらかが正しい。   realize: 実現する   equality: 平等    birthright: 生まれながら持つ権利、生得権

Brothers and sisters.  This is the nation we can create when we stand together and not let people divide us.

下線部： This: 直前に挙げた「こんな国にできる」という内容すべて。

The history of America and the fight for human dignity is a history of struggle.  They struggled because they said "I am a human being.  I have right.  You can't do that to me.  I need dignity."

struggle: 戦い、戦う　　human being: 人間  

And unions were formed, and people fought, and people died, and people were beaten, and people went to jail.

When millions of people stand up and fight... they win.

注意！

この英文中に We CAN be が何度も繰り返し強調されていますが、ここでは 「なることができる」ということを強調するために CAN を強く発音しています。普通は、助動詞全てに言えることですが、後に続く動詞の方が強く発音されます。　この音声の場合、内容と場合によっては CAN'Tと勘違いされる可能性があるので、注意が必要です。
