John Lennon の「Power To The People」
今日は日本を始めとする先進国の一般の人々がこの叫びを必要としているのではないかと思いつつ、彼が平和運動を積極的に行っていた時期の代表曲、パワー・トゥ・ザ・ピープル/Power To The People をご紹介します。ちなみにシングル盤のジャケットに表示されている「人々に勇気を」は曲のイメージとかけ離れていますので、個人的には採用しません。直訳で「人民に力を」の方がイメージに合ってます。
この歌は1971年4月にリリースされました。このあと小野洋子と結婚していたジョン/Johnは彼女の住むニューヨークへ移住して、市民権を申請することになります。この件でジョン/Johnはずっと戦い続けることになりました。なぜなら、ベトナム戦争真っ盛りのニクソン/Nixon政権下で、若い世代に絶大な影響力を持ったビートルズ/Beatlesのメンバーがアメリカで平和活動をすることに大きな懸念を抱いていたからです。後にニクソン政権がジョン・レノン/John Lennon 夫妻の家に盗聴器を仕掛け、FBIが常に彼を尾行して行動をチェックしていました。そして、ビートルズ/Beatles時代に大麻を所持して逮捕されたということを理由に米国の市民権を与えてくれなかったのです。
そんな彼が平和運動で民衆たちが立ち上がることを求めるスローガン的なこの歌を発表していたのです。ニクソン/Nixon が気に入るはずもありません。
